ART? |

What is ART? You can ask the question of any number of people and get any number of answers. Some answers will be as trite as "Art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder", to the more aloof "Art....is". There are those that view art as something that requires canvas or marble. Others claim it ceased to be created with the death of the likes of Monet. Some will steadfastly insist that the unusual works of controversial figures such as Robert Mapplethorpe or Andres Serrano are not art, but insist that the works of Picasso, who was equally controversial for his time, are benchmarks of art. Where does the true answer lie? I do not wish to try to pen my own inadequate definition for what is art, but would rather offer up an assessment by Thomas Hoving, former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city. Mr. Hoving believes that "Art happens when anyone in the world takes any kind of material and fashions it into a deliberate statement". This is the most accurate valuation I have ever heard as to what art is. Here I will breakdown art into periods and techniques that we might better understand it through disection.
