The Romans are believed to have first invested time in the development of grape vines in the Douro river basin of Spain around 210 BC. The Tinto de Toro vine grows in loose, sandy soil with good drainage. The thick skinned grapes grow in small bunches that are cylindrical and long with shoulders.
