Monastrell grapes thrive in Mediterranean climates, in
fact many lay reasonable claim that only in a Mediterranean setting can the
full flavor of these grapes come to life. In France, this varietal
can be known as Mourvèdre. Wines made with the Monastrell grape are
generally high in alcohol content, deep in color and robust in flavor.
It is mainly found in Murcia (52%), Alicante, Albacete and Valencia and it
is considered a main variety in DOs such as Alicante, Almansa, Costers del
Segre, Jumilla, Penedés, Valencia and Yecla.
