Why Girls Are Weird By Pamela Ribon |

In the category of “beach reading material”, I would probably give this book a semi-positive review. Its main character, Anna Koval, can be described as dysfunctional, light hearted, comical, and even creative at times. I am sure that all of us would be able to find a little bit of ourselves in Anna, and I believe that given the context of the story, that is what the author wants us to feel. Meet Anna, a lonely librarian who has just gone through a nasty break up. In an effort to fill the emptiness, Anna teaches herself html and even sets up her own web site. She finds herself posting her deepest thoughts online, and her web site turns into somewhat of a diary posting. It is in her online diary though, that she creates the illusion to her readers that she and her ex-boyfriend are still together. Somehow, in creating this illusion, Anna is able to wade through the pain a little easier. And somehow it becomes easier not to tell the whole truth, especially when not doing so is so easy. Her web site is a big hit and even develops a huge fan base, some a little on the psychotic side. My main criticism of this book is that I feel that the author tried to hard to make the character appear “cool” by making her so far out of the mainstream. But in doing so, I feel that the author essentially killed the character. As I read this book, I became less and less focused on how cool and how fascinating Anna K was, and more convinced that she was legitimately insane. My next read will definitely be a higher quality read. But like I said, this book would definitely qualify as an “okay” beach read. This book would appeal mainly to those in their twenties.
