Sangiovese is the principle grape varietal of Chianti. and
is the most widely planted varietal in all of Italy. It contains
flavors of earth, tobacco and coffee. Its produces wines with a soft
and ripe tannins, crisp and lively flavor strong in cherry fruit.
Sanguis Jovis, the Latin origin for the varietal name,
literally means "blood of Jove". Jove being the older name for the
mythological Roman god Jupiter.
Sangiovese has thin skins by
comparison to other varietals and is slow to mature and ripen. It
has a tendency to rot in dampness and has difficulty in elevations above
1,500 feet.
