What defines a "Period"? An art period is a phase in the development of the work of an artist, groups of artists or art movement. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Art periods are not defined by clear cut chronological date stamps. There are often periods of art history that will overlap as one period wanes and another emerges. There are also many periods that transpire concurrently in different parts of the world. The oriental and occidental art periods for example happen concurrently. I will compile a "short list" of some of the more prominent periods of mainly western art and will give some examples of these periods.
